BOOK CLUB MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
“Scythe by Neal Shusterman is a dystopian sci-fi novel set in a future where there is no natural death, and an all-knowing AI called the Thunderhead governs humanity. To control population growth, Scythes are tasked with ‘’gleaning’’ (Killing)people. The book follows two teenagers, Citra and Rowan, who are chosen to apprentice as Scythes under Scythe Faraday, neither of them wants this life, but refusing isn’t an option. Conflict arises when Scythe Goddard, who gleans without compassion proposes the idea that only one of the apprentices can become a scythe. The winner must glean the other. This novel explores themes of morality, power, and the value of life. Raising questions about humanity’s purpose in a world free from natural consequences. If you like dystopian sci-fi novels and character driven stories with layers of conflict, this is a book you’ll love.” - Weiya Liu

INDIGENIOUS PERSPECTIVES:SPRING EQUINOX
As the days grow longer and the chill of winter gives way to the warmth of spring, many of us eagerly anticipate the arrival of the Spring Equinox. For Indigenous peoples, this seasonal transition holds profound cultural and spiritual significance, symbolizing balance, renewal, and the interconnectedness of all life. The Spring Equinox occurs when day and night are nearly equal in length, highlighting the theme of balance that resonates deeply in Indigenous teachings. It marks a time of rebirth and new beginnings, aligning with the natural world's awakening from winter's slumber. In Indigenous cultures, this period is celebrated as a moment of harmony and the promise of growth and abundance. Traditional practices and ceremonies during the Spring Equinox are an integral part of Indigenous life. Smudging rituals, which involve burning sacred herbs like sage, are performed to cleanse spaces of negative energy and invite positive energy for the new season. These rituals set the stage for personal reflection and the setting of intentions, encouraging individuals to embrace new opportunities and personal growth. The equinox also serves as a time for communal gatherings, where stories and cultural teachings are shared. These gatherings strengthen community bonds and ensure that valuable knowledge is passed down to younger generations, preserving the rich heritage of Indigenous cultures. As we celebrate the arrival of spring, let us take a moment to honor the wisdom and traditions of Indigenous cultures, recognizing the profound significance of the Spring Equinox in their lives. Happy Spring Equinox 2025!!
