BOOK CLUB MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Serena Posthumus - “Beauty is terror. Whatever we call beauty, we quiver before it.” -Donna Tartt, The Secret History. Richard Papen, sick of his mundane Californian life and in search of real academic pursuit, enrolls at Hampden College. A drop out pre-med student, at Hampden he discovers the elusive Julian Morrow, a professor with a mysteriously small class, all of whom study ancient Greek. Eventually Richard is accepted into their ranks, and his life is altered forever. The book explores morality, murder, and the “fatal flaw” of a person—so disastrous it could lead to their downfall—all through the eyes of a somewhat unreliable narrator, keeping the reader guessing what’s true, and what’s been crafted by Richard himself. Written by one of the most respected modern writers and gaining the title of a modern classic, The Secret History will take you through turns and revelations so enthralling you’ll hardly be able to put it down, and even then the story will never quite leave your mind.
