Requirements for Students
To participate in the HSAP program a students must:
- Be at least 16 years of age
- Be registered in BSD and have completed grade 9 core subjects, or be registered as a mature student
- Hold a Young Worker Readiness Certificate - Young Worker Readiness Certificate Course | SAFE Work Manitoba (safemanitoba.com)
- Obtain parent/guardian permission if under 18 - HSAP Parent Guardian Approval Form
- Have a social insurance number
- Secure a job in an eligible trade.
- Have an approved apprenticeship agreement with their employer and school.
- Meet HSAP safety protocols in cooperation with their employer.
- Arrange timetable availability and maintain their academic progress at school.
- Arrange transportation to and from work.
From the start date shown on the Apprenticeship Agreement, students may earn HSAP hours outside of regular school hours, including:
- After school
- Weekends
- School breaks (winter and spring breaks)
- Over the summer
Students are encouraged to plan their timetables to allow time during the day to attend work to earn HSAP hours. Any hours worked during scheduled in-school class time cannot be credited for HSAP.
Student attendance and academic progress towards graduation at school will be monitored and must be maintained for their apprenticeship agreement to remain in effect.
An Apprenticeship agreement can be cancelled at any time by the student, parent/guardian (if under 18), the employer, or the school if minimum requirements are not being met. Employers are not obliged to provide hours to complete HSAP credits.
