During the week of March 17-21, 2025, students across several BSD schools had the unique opportunity to engage with Patrick Hunter, a talented two-spirit, Ojibwe painter, graphic designer, and award-winning entrepreneur from Red Lake, Ontario.
Beginning on March 17 and running through March 21, Patrick visited multiple schools, including Riverheights, Alexander, Linden Lanes, Prairie Hope, Vincent Massey, Betty Gibson, Green Acres, and Neelin. He connected with students through a series of workshops and presentations aimed at fostering creativity and cultural appreciation.
Some schools participated in hands-on painting projects, where Patrick guided them through techniques inspired by Indigenous artistry. The workshops encouraged students to explore their own artistic identities while learning about cultural themes.
Meanwhile, other schools held larger assemblies where they had the opportunity to hear Patrick speak about his journey as an artist, offering an engaging Q&A session to further their understanding of Indigenous perspectives in art.
One of the key highlights of the event was Patrick’s workshop on developing a personal art style. Hosted at Prairie Hope and Neelin High School, this session encouraged senior art students to explore themes in Patrick’s work and use them as inspiration for their own unique artistic expressions.
The weeklong event was an enriching experience that left a lasting impact. With the success of this year’s workshops, schools are hopeful for future collaborations that continue to bridge cultural education with artistic expression.
