Drivers Education is offered through Manitoba Public Insurance.  To sign up for drivers education, you must visit MPI or a local insurance broker.

Driver Z Overview

Courses will be offered in either a virtual or in-person format. Courses will be in one format only. Virtual classes will be hosted on the WebEx platform. Students who register for an in-person course can only join classes in person. Knowledge tests and vision screening will be held for virtual and in-person courses at the host school.

  • Students and parents/co-pilots must attend the Kick-off, which is held during the first class.
  • Students must provide an email address when they register to access the online application and receive course-relevant communication, including email invitations to the virtual class sessions.
  • Students must complete online learning before their first class.

Where can students go for information?

Where do students go to pay and register?

If you're at least 15 1/2 years old, you can register for Driver Z.

But first, you need to be setup as a customer. You'll need to go to an Autopac agent or MPI Service Centre and pay $50 for the Driver Z service (which includes the course, vision testing and the knowledge test).

A parent or guardian must be with you or they can sign a Parental Consent Form and you can go on your own.

To set up as a customer you will need to bring identification. Use the Proving My identity tool to find the documents you need. The student and parent/guardian will both need to provide an email address when you register.

Once you are set up as a customer and 15 1/2, visit the Course Finder to view which courses you are eligible for. Course finder will display details on when you can view upcoming courses and when the next registration date is for Driver Z.

When registration opens, we recommend you visit an Autopac Agent or MPI Service Centre to register. Arrive early, spots fill up fast! If you can’t attend a physical location that day, you can also call the Contact Centre to register by phone at 204-985-7000. You must be set up as a customer and have purchased the Driver Z service beforehand if you want to register by phone.

Please remember that the student must be present when registering in-person for a Driver Z course or if you are registering over the phone you must be on the call. A parent or guardian cannot register for you.

How do students and co-pilots access the online learning?

Once students have registered, they will receive an email 31 days before their course start date with instructions on how to log into Driver Z.

If registered for a virtual course, students will receive an email with a WebEx link for their classes.

Students are required to do the following:

  • Log in to Driver Z online to set up their account.
  • Complete Zone 1 (activities 1-29) before Kick-off. This takes approximately 12 hours to complete.
  • Invite at least one co-pilot (up to eight) through Driver Z online.
    • Co-pilots will also be required to log on and complete Zone 1 (activities 1-6) to support the student and ensure all necessary tasks are finished to complete the program. This takes approximately two to three hours to complete.
  • Attend classes based on which format they registered for; virtual or in-person.

Students and co-pilots must have separate email addresses to ensure they receive the appropriate emails for their roles.
